(español abajo) A recycle artist from the U.S. whose main medium is textile, I live and work in Mexico since 2004. Inspired by the huipil, a Mesoamerican dress, I began stitching imaginary garments and fabric constructions in 2003 while living in Santa Fe, New Mexico. For 25 years, I was mostly a painter, using text and image to convey messages. In 2003, I switched to cloth and paper, painting, collaging, and stitching stories rather than painting them. Moving to Mexico in 2004 enlarged my worldview and altered my mediums. In my hands, reclaimed textiles, found objects, and gifted collections, all vestiges of their former lives, coalesce to transform chaos, destruction, and injustice into works of beauty and ritual in a symbolic act of mending our world . My commitment to social consciousness and environmental awareness is woven into all the pieces I create.
My art has been shown in museums and galleries, in more than 80 exhibitions, and is found in collections in the U.S., Australia, Canada, Guatemala, Holland, Mexico and U.K. In 2017, I opened La Huipilista Artspace, a place where artists, workshops, salons, and all kinds of artful events. I believes in “All Art, All the Time,” and thus, I live, work, and exhibit here, where I am the artist in (my own) residence.
Artista del reciclaje estadounidense, cuyo principal medio es el textil, vivo y trabajo en México desde 2004. Inspirada por el huipil, un vestido mesoamericano, comencé a bordar prendas imaginarias y construcciones textiles en 2003, mientras vivía en Santa Fe, Nuevo México. Durante 25 años, me dediqué principalmente a la pintura, utilizando texto e imagen para transmitir mensajes. En 2003, cambié a la tela y el papel, pintando, haciendo collages y bordando historias en lugar de pintarlas. Mudarme a México en 2004 amplió mi visión del mundo y transformó mis medios. En mis manos, textiles recuperados, objetos encontrados y colecciones donadas, todos vestigios de sus vidas pasadas se fusionan para transformar el caos, la destrucción y la injusticia en obras de belleza y ritual, en un acto simbólico de reparación de nuestro mundo. Mi compromiso con la conciencia social y ambiental está presente en todas las piezas que creo. Mi arte se ha exhibido en museos y galerías, en más de 80 exposiciones, y forma parte de colecciones en Estados Unidos, Australia, Canadá, Guatemala, Países Bajos, México y el Reino Unido. En 2017, abrí La Huipilista Artspace, un espacio donde se reúnen artistas, talleres, salones y todo tipo de eventos artísticos. Creo en "Todo el arte, todo el tiempo", y por ello, vivo, trabajo y expongo aquí, donde soy la artista en mi propia residencia.
