Bartula's multi-dimensional approach to painting, layers, textures and collage, has recently adopted a new shape and form: the traditional Mexican shirt or huipil. Created from canvas, paper, thread, paint and found objects, the shirts represent human characteristics.
A new series called “Las Negadas” features huipiles which pay tribute to female figures, whether human or mythological, who have been maligned, forgotten or suppressed by HIStory. The central part of each exhibit is a huipil, a traditional blouse which “covers up” vital parts of a woman’s body… the breasts, the belly. Each huipil created by Bartula embodies the essence of the personage in mind, uncovering and reinterpreting the very traits that led to her suppression.
“Las Negadas,” (Women Denied) includes among others: Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz, La Malinche, Coatlicue, La Llorona, Salome, Hypatia, and moves forward into contemporary times, with women such as Ana Mendieta and Benazir Bhutto.
